Lice and Nit Facts

• Lice are primarily spread from head to head contact.
The sharing of hats, combs, brushes, and even clothing can also cause spreading.

• Head lice are contagious, relatively common, and are not a sign of poor hygiene.

• Lice do not spread diseases and they are not dangerous.

• Nits (lice eggs) are usually found behind the ears and at the neckline.

• Lice have an approximate lifespan one month.

• Lice feed off human blood to survive.

• OTC treatments only kill live lice. It is the manual removal, or nit-picking, that actually eradicates the nits (lice eggs) from your hair and prevents re-infestation.

• Symptoms of head lice include itching or the sensation of something moving in the hair.

• Symptoms may not appear for 3-4 weeks.

Lice eggs (nits) look like a grain of sand about ¼ an inch from the scalp but they CANNOT be easily removed from the hair. They hatch within 7-10 days.

Newly hatched baby lice (nymphs) are brown or tan in color and become adult lice within 7-10 days.

Adult head lice are the size of a sesame seed and are rust in color. They can lay up to 100 eggs during their life span.
